A former leading fashion model who was 5'10'' tall, Carey was popular with high-end American fashion designers like Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. Her father, who was a renowned scientist, who was awarded the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists' 1979 Scientist of the Year award is a renowned geologist. Carey is a resident of throughout the world due to his profession. When she was attending the University of Colorado at part-time and was able to catch the attention of a Ford model Agency representative in New York. After moving to France and briefly lived between Paris, Bordeaux and New York, she decided to return to New York and continue her training. Then, Vogue, Glamour and various other magazines were featured on their cover. As a model, she went to New York University full-time to obtain a degree in literature.
